Exchange links with numerous web sites. Only exchange links with web sites that share some common interest to your web site. 

For example:
If you have a graphic design business try to exchange links with photographers, web designers, programmers, media artists and other web sites that are closely related to yours.  This method should help create more traffic to your web site, because many search engines give a better page rank to web sites that are popular and have many other web sites linked to them.
Key Words

Make sure the keywords on each page relate to the content on the page. 

For example: If you have the keyword  "photography" and this is one of your main keywords, then make sure you repeat this word at least 4 times in the visible text contained on the same page. However, you should also make sure that it makes sense and that it reads well.

Do not submit your web site too often. This may be considered SPAM.  Sometimes it is better to hand submit your web site to search engines.  Keep a log book of the dates you submitted your web site and make a note of the search engines submission schedule, so you do not submit too early.

Content is King

Your web site should be updated monthly. Many web sites are built and then left for years before any modifications are made. Not making modifications can have several negative effects on the traffic to your web site. If you offer a service this is even more important as most people will check you out on the Internet before hiring you. Visitors will not come back if your site stays the same and there is nothing new to see on it. Search engines can now recognize if a site is being updated regularly and if the content is useful they will rank it higher. Relevant content is known to partially determine where search engines place your web site in search results. Web sites with relevant, up to date and useful content will attract both live visitors and search engines. Make your site a place that people will use as a resource on your subject. For example if you are a law firm, then you should provide free legal advice and tips. This will draw traffic to your site and keep them coming back when they are looking for more advice on that subject. They may even bookmark your site, link to it or tell a friend about it.
